Ancient Greek architecture has had a great influence on the styles of columns used today. There are three main common designs, which are derived from the Ancient Greek period; Doric columns, Ionic columns and Corinthian Columns.
Doric columns can be found on the Parthenon in Athens, it is the simplest and oldest of the Greek designs. It features fluted sides and a rounded smooth top. Ionic columns are easily identified by the ram horn-like or scrolled shaped designs featured in the top or capitol of the column. Corinthian columns are the latest of the Greek column designs. They can be identified by the intricate carvings of leaves, olives or laurels in the capitol of the column.
Later on in the late eighteenth early nineteenth century, we saw the fusion of both Greek and Roman styles come together to form the Romanesque and Egyptian styles of columns. The Egyptian columns are said to be models of the lotus flower, with carvings of leaves and rings around the capitol. The Romanesque columns are based on much simpler design, with carving of flowers or other patterns in the capitol.
